Everytown For Gun Safety Caught Lying About School Shootings

When we hear the phrase “school shooting” flash across our television screens, computer monitors, or over the radio, we all get a visceral, chilling image, don’t we?

A young, white male gunman opening fire in a classroom or hallway. Terrified children being led out of schools by tense police officers and frightened teachers. SWAT teams in body armor sweeping room by room. Panicked parents gathered at designated meeting areas. Grim press conferences from local officials. Police cars for as far as the eye can see.

And Ambulances. Lots of ambulances. Never enough ambulances.

There are also things we don’t think about when we hear the term “school shooting.”

Shootout between gangs in empty parking lots over summer breaks. Drug deals gone bad on a Saturday night. Suicides in remote parking lots. Shootings down the street from schools. Armed robberies near college campuses.

The worst mass shooting of police officers of the century after a Black Lives Matter march in Dallas.

And yet all of these incidents—and some even more bizarre—are incredibly included in a list of 200 claimed school shootings since the 2012 Sandy Hook elementary school massacre compiled by Michael Bloomberg’s Everytown for Gun Safety.
