At approximately 11 p.m. Saturday night, deputies in Aurora, IA received a domestic disturbance call at a local mobile home park. As officers were en route, dispatch received a second phone call from neighbors who heard 55-year-old Dennis Chamberlain threatening a woman with a gun.

When authorities arrived on scene, they attempted to talk to Chamberlain but he wasn’t interested in discussion and began shooting at police officers. Deputies did not return fire, calling in a hostage negotiator to talk to the man instead as well as a number of other agencies, including the Iowa State Police Tactical Team, Aurora Fire Department and Oelwein Mercy Ambulance Service were called in.

The stand-off with police lasted roughly two hours before Chamberlain finally gave up and Buchanan County Sheriff’s deputies took him into custody.

Chamberlin faces numerous charges including Attempted Murder, Intimidation with a Dangerous Weapon, Domestic Abuse Assault with Dangerous Weapon, Reckless Use of Firearm Causing Property Damage and False Imprisonment.
