I read an interesting Op-Ed piece this past weekend that was published in the Los Angeles Times. The title “Why Men Feel the Need to Carry Guns” caught my eye and I decided to read it, even though I was expecting a liberal hit piece.

The piece was written by Jennifer Carlson, a young lady who is a sociologist reared in the midwest by a conservative family. Carlson is also the author of Citizen-Protectors: The Everyday Politics of Guns in an Age of Decline.

The piece makes the point that men carry guns for more than just self-defense, but because of the decline of the American Dream. The Op-Ed piece wasn’t really pong enough to do the topic justice and drew fire from many pro-gun writers. I was a little confused as I read the piece because it sounded like she was saying that men were attempting to compensate for something by carrying guns, but at the same time, she appeared to be pro-gun.

Carlson spent time in Michigan with pro-gun groups. She went to open carry picnics, gun ranges and rallies in support of the Second Amendment. I have to give her credit for her …read more
