Carolyn Maloney-D NY, wants all gun owners or those purchasing a gun to have liability insurance or face a $10,000 fine. According to Maloney,

“We require insurance to own a car, but no such requirement exists for guns. The results are clear: Car fatalities have declined by 25 percent in the last decade, but gun fatalities continue to rise.”

Where to begin? Okay, how about this: Car fatalities have gone down because cars are being made with better technology that protects drivers and passengers better than before. Insurance or lack thereof has no bearing on whether people get killed in automobile accidents. Cars now have airbags for the driver and front passenger and side airbags. The design has changed to create cars that absorb more of the impact instead of the occupants. Roads are also better built, helping to make them safer. And don’t forget that more people are wearing seatbelts now than ever before.

She also asserts that gun fatalities are rising and the facts don’t support this claim. For example, in 2010, there were 19,392 suicides by firearm. In 2011, 19,766. This is a small increase, but using Japan as an example, firearms aren’t necessary for …read more
