The lower chamber of Czech Parliament on Wednesday approved an amendment to the country’s Constitution allowing legal gun owners to participate in the country’s defense, the Associated Press reported.
The 139-9 majority vote was reportedly a reaction to the European Union’s directive banning certain semi-automatic weapons. Should this constitutional amendment pass the Czech Upper House of Parliament, the country’s 300,000 gun license holders will essentially be deputized state officials and exempt from the EU dictate.
The EU rule is too restrictive, by majority Czech standards, and is reportedly a reaction itself to recent extremist attacks in Europe. The Czech Republic has vowed to file legal action against the EU’s directive, the Associated Press reported.
