FREMONT, Calif. (AP) — Officials have determined that a man involved in an exchange of gunfire with police in the Northern California city of Fremont died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The East Bay Times reports that the Alameda County Coroner’s Office identified the man as 24-year-old Roger Perez of Orinda.

Authorities say an East Bay Regional Parks officer stopped a vehicle carrying several occupants on Sunday. The officer then alerted Fremont police and one of the vehicle’s occupants fled with a gun.

Officers found Perez in an alley behind a Walgreens where police say he fired his weapon at the officers, who then returned fire.

Authorities say it appears Perez shot himself in the head after the officers shot at him. He had no other gunshot wounds to his body.
