A 17-year-old opened fire on classmates Tuesday morning at Great Mills High School, located roughly 60 miles from D.C., injuring two. The shooting was over in a minute, thanks to an armed resource officer who acted quickly and fired at the gunman.

The two both exchanged a single shot. The gunman’s shot missed, but the officer’s did not.

The gunman was killed by the shot, ending the deadly threat.

A school resource officer fired at Rollins, who almost simultaneously fired back with a handgun, Cameron said. The school resource officer, identified as Blaine Gaskill, was not injured during the incident, which unfolded in less than a minute.

“While it’s still tragic, he may have saved other people’s lives,” Gov. Larry Hogan said of Gaskill.

The male victim is being treated at MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital. The girl was taken to University of Maryland Prince George’s Hospital Center, and is battling life-threatening injuries, Cameron said.

The shooting comes just a month after a horrible school shooting in Florida which left 17 dead and 16 wounded. In that incident, an armed school resource officer had waited outside instead of engaging the threat.
