As things currently stand, federal law prohibits victims and the family of victims to sue gun stores and firearm manufacturers. The law was passed because it was a common tactic to blame the people who sold the gun for what someone later did with the gun.

For most of us, the idea of blaming Remington or Glock for a murder makes absolutely no sense. The gun isn’t responsible, after all. I mean, it would be one thing if the firearm had some kind of a catastrophic failure that resulted in death, but that’s different. The maker may well be responsible then.

No, these were lawsuits that existed just to punish gun companies for failing to read the minds and divine the future.

They were punishment for existing, really.

However, it seems that Democrats want to bring back those days.

House and Senate Democrats introduced legislation Tuesday they say will allow victims of gun violence to have their day in court.

The Equal Access to Justice for Victims of Gun Violence Act aims to repeal federal protections blocking firearm and ammunition manufacturers, dealers and trade groups from most civil lawsuits when a firearm is used unlawfully or in a crime.
