Las Vegas police identified the gunman responsible for killing 50 people and injuring some 406 others at a concert at Mandalay Bay Casino on Sunday night.
From a room on the 32nd floor of the casino’s hotel, Stephen Craig Paddock, 64, of Mesquite, Nevada, opened fire around 10:08 pm on a crowd of more than 22,000 people attending the Route 91 Harvest Festival, Las Vegas police said in a statement.
A SWAT team breached Paddock’s hotel room door and found him dead of an apparent suicide. He had more than 10 firearms in the room with him. Details regarding Paddock’s motive have not been released by investigators yet.
“I think it’s important to understand that this investigation is going to be long and contracted before we get to the bottom of everything associated with it,” said Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo during a press conference Monday morning to identify the shooter.
He added that investigators have not yet completed their investigation into Paddock’s background. His team is also receiving support from other local and federal authorities. Investigators are currently executing a search warrant on Paddock’s hotel room and home.
