ILION, NEW YORK — A local school was placed on lock-down after a reported shooting took place in the near vicinity. When Ilion police arrived at the residence, they found one intruder dead outside. It is believed that the occupant of the home successfully defended himself from the intruder through the use of a firearm.

“What we know right now is that it was a robbery attempt and the suspect entered the home, and the homeowner was able to shoot the suspect,” Ilion Police Chief Tim Parisi said to WKTV.

Police eventually identified the deceased suspect as Dasean Chastine, 24, of Kennedy Plaza in Utica. The homeowner took some damage to his head during the confrontation but was treated for injuries on site and released. This case is being treated as a self-defense incident.

While we commonly regard New York as an anti-gun state, there is a huge difference between New York City politics and upstate New York. In these areas, gun ownership is widely treated in a different fashion than in the five burroughs.
