DALLAS, TX — A man was shot and killed after attempting to force his way into a Dallas apartment this weekend, Dallas News reports.

The robbery, which was attempted in an apartment complex in broad daylight, was made the worse by an assault on the body of the 54-year-old homeowner.

According to Dallas News:

Officers were called about 2:30 p.m. to a shooting in the 2600 block of Highland Road, near Hunnicut Road.

The 28-year-old man whose identity has not been released had reportedly assaulted the 54-year-old homeowner and attempted to enter his apartment, police said. Several witnesses confirmed the sequence of events laid out by the homeowner, and police said that the homeowner and other witnesses called 911 to report the incident. The homeowner was interviewed and released. The case will go to a grand jury, police said.

Police said the shooting is being investigated as a murder “based on the totality of the circumstances,” but no further details were provided about the incident.

With witnesses backing the statement made by the homeowner, I doubt that the murder investigation would remain as such for very long — especially with a brutal assault accompanying the attempted break-in.
