The Atlanta Police Department has announced it will partner with community advocates to co-host a gun buyback event in June.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported the event, which will implement a “no questions asked” policy, will be held on June 15 at the Atlanta Civic Center, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The Atlanta Police will be partnering with the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office, FCSO Chaplaincy Program and the organization Stop Atlanta Violence Effectively.
S.A.V.E. reportedly raised $30,000 for the event over a span of more than 18 months. An APD spokeswoman indicated handguns would fetch a price of $50, while long guns will be bought back for $100.
Around 100 firearms were collected in a similar 2015 event organized by S.A.V.E. chairman Rev. R.L. White.
“Dr. White stresses that this is not an attempt to confiscate guns, from gun owners, nor is it an effort to prevent gun ownership, but it is an attempt to draw attention to a crisis that is being faced by communities to prevent more violence as an ongoing experience,” APD said in a news release.
