Jim Chambers, owner of the EAV Barbell Club in Atlanta, said he doesn’t want any cops or military members in his gym, posted a profanity-laced sign saying so, and, despite backlash, does not regret or apologize for the decision.
Chambers, who is a life-long activist, said the majority of his gym members are minorities and simply not comfortable around cops. He believes law enforcement in America is an entity that “serves capitalism and white supremacy” so he chooses not to offer services to them.
Chambers said he’s had the no-cop, no-military policy since he’s opened and doesn’t plan to make any changes. However, following recent backlash, Chambers did decide to remove the sign, although he’s not backing down from his policy.
“I didn’t want the other folks there to take the heat that I’m willing to take,” Chambers said, adding that he doesn’t think it was so much the policy but rather the vulgarity of the sign that had people in an uproar.
Chambers said he plans to put up another, curse-free sign expressly stating the no-cop policy.
