Q: I really like your posts. Do you know where I can find rules on CPL and travel. I have family in Indiana.

A: First and foremost, you need to be sure whether the state you are travelling to has reciprocity with Michigan. Those agreements are usually spelled out and documented on the Michigan AG’s page. However, be admonished that these relationships can be quickly changed without notice, as was the case with Nevada and Michigan a while back.

Next, you need to do your homework. As the old adage goes: “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.” When you are carrying in a reciprocal state, you must follow their laws. As you can imagine, every state in the Union is unique. You should investigate the following items before you hit the highway:

– Lethal Force
– Castle Doctrine
– Duty To Retreat
– Open Carry
– Preemption
– Law Enforcement Encounters
– Pistol Free Zones
– Magazine Limits
– Manner of Transport

Great places to look for info would obviously include that state’s legislature’s web site, that state’s state police web site, that state’s AG’s page, and any good gun rights association’s web site. There are a litany of other resources to consult, but like sources …Read the Rest
