Some residents at a Tarpon Springs, Florida, apartment complex are calling a fellow resident a hero after she – without hesitation – stepped in to help a neighbor in need during an unprovoked attack early Saturday morning.
Susan Bass said she heard a knock at her door around 4 a.m. and saw 18-year-old Daniel Morley, who was dressed in only his boxer shorts, standing outside. Bass said she noticed Morley was bleeding, so she opened the door to offer him help.
However, as Bass opened the door, Morley attacked her, causing the woman to scream. Bass’ screams were heard by her neighbor across the hall, 31-year-old Brittany Cheek, who promptly grabbed her gun and came to help. Cheek shot Morley a single time in the leg, stopping the attack.
Carolyn Lubecki, who also lives in the apartment building and called 911 when she heard the screams, later told reporters that in situations such as those, people typically panic, but Cheek didn’t.
“She didn’t think twice,” Lubecki said of Cheek, calling her actions “an amazing act of bravery.”
Morley now remains behind bars and Cheek is being hailed a hero.
“The willingness to, without question, just help her neighbor in need without a thought is amazing,” Lubecki
