A rookie cop with the British Transport Police is being hailed a hero after he – being armed only with a baton – took on all three terrorists during the London Bridge attack Saturday night.
The officer, who has been with the department for less than two years and said to still be on probation, suffered stab wounds to his face, leg, and hands. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, but a close friend described the injuries to The Telegraph as being “life-changing.”
The officer, whose name has not been publicly released, was one of the first officers on the scene.
BTP Chief Constable Paul Crowther said the officer “showed enormous courage in the face of danger.” Crowther described the bravery displayed by the officer as outstanding, adding that he was “extremely proud.”
Crowther said the officer has received hundreds of messages of support from not only the UK but across the world.
At least seven people were killed and several dozen injured during what has now been confirmed as a terrorist attack. All three suspects were fatally shot by responding officers.
