DeKalb, Illinois – Episode 159 of the AR-15 Podcast features Reed Snyder and J.D. as your hosts! This week, they discuss where cutting corners on a build may save you some money, and conversely where it may ambush your rifle.

First, they start off with what not to do. They key takeaways from this segment are where your money is best spent in a build. Incidentally, it’s the stuff you don’t see that’s most crucial–the sexy optics and muzzle brakes are less important. Instead they place emphasis on the guts of your rifle like a quality bolt carrier group. Another place not to skimp is of course the barrel. Reed and J.D. go over some considerations when choosing a barrel and gas system.

So where exactly can you cut corners? One of the places that seem to be less important is the lower parts kit. When all said and done, the lower parts kit is largely pins and a trigger, so there’s space there for upgrades later without breaking your bank on the front end.
