DeKalb, Illinois – This week’s installment of the AR-15 Podcast is the sixth installment of the revisited and revised series of the built-from-scratch AR-15 rifle! Episodes 1-5 covered the assembly from the smallest details to the completion of a fully functioning rifle. But before we can take the new rifle out, there are a few critical final steps–function testing and zeroing.

The guys first go through the function tests. These are perhaps more crucial as they go to whether the rifle actually works or not. The upside is that all the tests are mechanical and therefore observable. The main components that are checked are the magazine release, the bolt functioning, and of course the trigger.

Next, the hosts go through zeroing your rifle. What good is a brand new, custom rifle if you can’t hit anything with it? The first question is, what would you like your zero to be? Deciding that is necessary before you can accurize your rifle. Next, is bore sighting the rifle. And finally, once you begin the firing process to get zero, it’s important to remember to zero using small increments. Minor adjustments can be quite noticeable downrange.
