OKLAHOMA CITY — School districts in Oklahoma are now able to select designated school employees to carry firearms on school property. The bill was approved by the heavily Republican Senate and sent to Governor Mary Fallin (R). Those in favor of the bill say that it makes students safer, while opponents of the bill feel that the bill would do the exact opposite.

Though Fallin’s office has made no comment as to whether she will approve the bill or not, she has advocated for expanding gun rights in the state.

Specifically, the bill allows for school boards to appoint one employee as the official firearms carrier. The school district would pay for the employee’s training. School resource officers in Oklahoma can already carry firearms, but this bill spreads the right to additional school staff as well.

The bill requires the designated handgun carrier toattention

  • Maintain a handgun license
  • Pass a psychological evaluation, and
  • Undergo firearms and emergency response training

A substantial amount of parents of school-age children in Oklahoma feel that this bill is a step in the right direction. They feel that their children will be safer at school with an armed employee on school property.
