The Isla Vista spree killer started his rampage by stabbing three people to death in his apartment. Elliot Rodger then shot and killed three more people. Using the homicides as a pretext, California legislators created the Gun Violence Restraining Order (GVRO). As losangeles,cbs.local succinctly puts it, “The legislation will give police the authority to seize that person’s legally owned weapons for 21 days without his or her prior knowledge.” Come the New Year, the State of California will be able to disarm forcibly citizens on the say-so of a gun owners’ relatives or significant other. But not just guns . . .

The cops can also confiscate “documentary evidence” of a potential ballistic threat to the gun owner or others. That list includes (but is not limited to) “writings, documents, blueprints, drawings, photographs, computer printouts, microfilms, X-rays, files, diagrams, ledgers, books, tapes, audio and video recordings, films, and papers of any type or description.”
