South Dakota -(Ammoland.com)- Almost 56,000 visitors across the nation started 2016 on the right foot by participating in free, guided First Day Hike Programs in America’s state parks.

America’s State Parks First Day Hikes offered an opportunity to begin the New Year rejuvenating and connecting with the outdoors by taking a healthy hike at a state park on Jan. 1, 2016.

The First Day Hikes attracted 55,985 participants who covered 133,832 miles on 1,168 guided hikes, trots, canoe and bicycle trips, ski outings and more.

South Dakota hosted hikes at 10 state parks where 259 people traveled 373 miles.

“The First Day Hikes are a great way to start the New Year,” said state park director Doug Hofer. “This initiative reminds people to get outside and get active in our state parks no matter the season.”

First Day Hikes originated over 20 years ago at the Blue Hills Reservation, a state park in Milton, Massachusetts.
