An Alabama man will spend nearly two years behind bars for illegally possessing a firearm — a charge he’s received three times before.
Federal authorities for the Southern District of Alabama announced Monday 52-year-old Roosevelt Jones, of Selma, will spend up to 21 months in prison after a Dallas County state trooper saw a gun in the man’s backseat during a traffic stop in January.
Jones was on supervised release for the latest of his three prior convictions for illegal possession of a firearm when the state trooper said he tried to avoid a driver’s license checkpoint. He plead guilty in April after a grand jury indictment.
Possession of a firearm by a prohibited person is punishable up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine, according to court documents.
United States District Court Judge Kristi K. Dubose sentenced Jones to another six months imprisonment to run concurrently with the most recent conviction, to be followed by another three-year term of supervised release. Rather than pay a fine, Dubose ordered Jones to pay $100 in special assessments.
