AK 400 Series – A Kalashnikov Pre-Production Prototype?

While in Russia, Larry Vickers got his hands on the Kalashnikov AK-400, a 7.62x39mm assault rifle.
It looks an awful lot like the AK-12, formerly known as the AK 200, which is one of the two rifles—along with the A-545—competing to becoming the official service rifle of the Russian military.
Is the AK-400 just the final version of the AK-12?
