Acting Milwaukee County Sheriff Richard R. Schmidt announced Tuesday that public safety will be his number one priority during the transition period after former Sheriff David Clarke resigned last week.
This vow to keep the public safe included the fair treatment of all inmates at Milwaukee County jail, though no major changes to the department will take place until a new sheriff is chosen, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.
“There will be a sense of urgency mandated in our organization to serve the citizens of Milwaukee County with courtesy and civility, second-to-none customer service to protect the citizens of Milwaukee County,” Schmidt said at a Tuesday press conference.
The promise came after former Sheriff David Clarke abruptly announced his resignation last Thursday, leaving Gov. Scott Walker to look for an interim replacement.
While he doesn’t know how long his tenure will be, Schmidt said he would request that the National Corrections Institute review operations at the county jail, where six people have died since April 2016. Those who passed away at the jail include a mentally ill inmate who died from dehydration and a newborn. Until that review is completed,
