Compactness is the word of the day when talking about the Sig Sauer Copperhead MPX (Photos: Chris Eger/Guns.com)
Sig Sauer’s new, and very compact, braced pistol was on hand at SHOT Show in Las Vegas this month and its origin was up for speculation.
Announced just two weeks before the giant firearms industry trade show, the Copperhead is an ultra-compact offering in the company’s MPX line featuring a 14.5-inch overall length largely due to its collapsible Sig Pivoting Contour Brace and 3.5-inch barrel.

The requirements were similar to those laid down by the U.S. Army for their Sub Compact Weapon program last year, for which Sig, along with five other companies, were tapped to provide sample weapons for evaluation. The goal of the SCW competition would be to fill a need for a small but effective room broom for the Army’s protection details, which currently use a variety of HK MP5s and similar weapons.

While SIG was mum about the Copperhead’s pedigree when asked, the SCW program is expected to pick a winning design in the next few months and a number of similar ultra-shorty 9mm’s were new and on hand in Vegas last week, which could be good for consumers.
