Sitting in limbo since September, a major 9/11 bill is getting a strong push from advocates before the year is up.

Lawmakers and officials in the Pennsylvania township of Lower Makefield are asking members of the U.S. Congress to pass the $4 billion James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Reauthorization Act before the last legislative session of the year this Friday.

According to the Bucks County Courier Times:

House Bill 1786 and Senate Bill 928 would indefinitely extend the World Trade Center Health Program, which provides medical treatment for those suffering from health issues related to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, said Mike Fitzpatrick, R-8, of Middletown. Passage of the bill is critical to guaranteeing medical assistance to roughly 70,000 first responders after the original bill expired in September, Fitzpatrick said.

“This is a matter of nationwide priority,” Don Mihalek, director for the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association, told the Bucks County Courier Times. “This is not an issue that will resolve itself overnight, and as we see each and every day, more and more responders are afflicted by diseases directly related to Sept. 11 than I think people ever thought.”
