Multiple law enforcement agencies are asking for the public’s help locating the person responsible for a brutal home invasion in Enfield, North Carolina, over the weekend that left two elderly couples dead.
Authorities say the victims were shot to death as they sat at the kitchen table playing cards, something the four often did, according to friends and family. Few details are being released at this time, but Halifax County Sheriff Wes Tripp confirmed some items of value were taken from the home.
“I will not tip my hands to these cowards, so we’re keeping everything kind of close at hand,” Tripp said.
The victims were identified as Janice Harris, 72; James Harris, 88; James Whitley, 76; and Peggy Whitley, 67. A family member of one of the victims discovered them Monday morning.
Tripp said he personally knew the victims, who were both well-known and well-liked in the community. Tripp also noted this is the first murder investigation of this magnitude in more than 30 years.
Tripp said, though it’s hard, he must set his emotions aside and focus on the task at hand, which is finding the couples’ killer.
“They were just good people, and they didn’t deserve to die this way,” Tripp said.
