A California homeowner opened fire on a young man trying to force his way inside his house Monday night, according to the Hesperia Police Department.
Hesperia police said on Tuesday that the suspect, Andres Sanchez, 18, of Hesperia, was in critical condition after the homeowner shot him multiple times during the home invasion robbery attempt.
“Through interviews and evidence at the scene, Detectives believe that for reasons still unknown, Sanchez went to the location and began forcing open the front door as the residents slept,” Hesperia police said in a statement.
According to the statement, the homeowner called 911 around 9:39 pm after hearing noise at the front door and then confronted Sanchez. The homeowner opened fire after Sanchez gained entry to the house.
Once police arrived, they found Sanchez suffering from gunshot wounds to his upper body. He was airlifted to a hospital where he was listed in critical condition. The homeowner was treated for minor injuries by paramedics on the scene.
Police said several other residents, including four juveniles, were home during the incident, but none were injured during the confrontation. Authorities confirmed the armed resident, as well as the others who were inside the home at the time of the break-in, are
