A 13-year-old boy was struck in the head by a falling bullet while playing basketball outside of his home in Hammond, Indiana, over the weekend.
The teen was in his back yard around 9:30 p.m. Saturday when he was hit by what was believed to be falling celebratory gunfire. At first the boy’s friends thought he was having a seizure, but after he was taken to the hospital, they discovered he had been hit in the top of the head with a bullet.
The teen was flown to a Chicago hospital and, according to the boy’s grandmother, he is not doing well.
Lt. Steve Kellogg with the Hammond Police said there is no indication that the act was intentional, but nonetheless left the boy critically injured.
Authorities are asking the public for help in identifying and locating the person responsible for the gunfire, who could face a minimum of criminal recklessness charges.
Authorities are also urging against celebratory gunshots fired into the air, noting that what goes up, must come down.
