Many years ago when I played high school football—okay, when I stood on the sidelines and watched better athletes play high school football—I noticed something about human nature.
During those games where one team was clearly dominant, there often came a point where you could tell that the losing team had their spirits simply broken. They didn’t get off the ball with any enthusiasm, let themselves get pushed all over the field, and losing players soon began amassing minor sprains and bruises to get out of the game. They’d all but forfeit the games, and had basically stopped showing up.
