The Single-Seven makes a great trail companion for hikers and bow or rifle hunters. It’s also suitable as a primary hunting revolver for everything from sage grouse to deer. If you’re in big-bear country, you might want something with a little more punch.

A trail gun should be compact and versatile, something you can use for small or big game and carry all day. That’s what drew me to Ruger’s new Single-Seven; it’s an anywhere, do-anything hunting companion. Built on their time-proven Single-Six, single-action revolver frame, it’s lightweight and handy. And, thanks to its .327 Federal Magnum chambering, it can fire .32 ACP, .32 S&W, .32 Long, and .32 H&R Mag. ammunition.

I tested all five cartridges on my range out of the 4.6-inch barrel version (5.5-inch and 7.5-inch versions are also available). I fired five-shot groups with 20 different factory loads and two handloads. Average accuracy was a respectable 1.37 inches, with muzzle velocities varying from 626 fps for a .32 S&W load to 1,511 fps for a .327 Fed. Mag. load—which should give you some idea of the kind of flexibility you have with the gun.
