FLORIDA — 10 years ago, Hurricane Katrina struck the Sunshine State, devastating the area and making history. Thousands of people fled their homes, taking only what they could fit in their vehicles with them, knowing they may never see their home and whatever was left inside again. Many gun owners who did not have concealed weapons permits brought their valued firearms with them as they fled the storm. Little did they realize in all the chaos that they were breaking concealed carry laws.

New Orleans police confiscated firearms from many people’s homes and even some who were trying to evacuate with their valuable belongings. Florida gun owners could have been charged with a third-degree felony punishable by up to five years in prison if they have their weapon on or about their person in public without a concealed weapons permit, even while packing up and fleeing a hurricane. The NRA and the Second Amendment Foundation filed a lawsuit against the police force, driving them to agree to return the firearms 3 years later, though not all were returned to their owners.
